CLEARING GROCERY DEBTS IN AL QUDS!

The tradition of closing the zimem (debt ledger) was a wonderful practice during the Ottoman era that encouraged charity and solidarity. The 'zimem defteri' was the ledger where grocers, butchers, and other tradespeople recorded the debts of customers who shopped on credit.

Wealthy individuals would randomly select these ledgers during blessed times like Ramadan and pay off the debts inside, thereby easing the burden of the debtors without them ever knowing.

This tradition was seen as a delicate and honorable way to support those in need by keeping the spirit of solidarity alive in society. Today, this tradition is still maintained in some places and kept alive as a beautiful example of social solidarity.

As Mirasımız Quds Association, we have taken action to continue this cherished tradition of our ancestors in the blessed city of Al Quds, which is our primary field of work. By purchasing the credit (zimem) ledgers of our needy brothers and sisters living in Al Quds, we are clearing their debts.
